Description

Polygonatum cirrhifolium, the Himalayan Solomon’s seal, is a perennial herb of the family Asparagaceae, native to the temperate and sub-alpine Himalayan forests — from Himachal Pradesh through Uttarakhand to Nepal, Bhutan, and Yunnan — at elevations between 1,500 and 3,600 metres. The plant produces characteristic alternate, tendril-bearing leaves along arching stems and develops fleshy, white-yellow rhizomes with the distinctive circular scars from which the generic name Polygonatum derives. In classical Ayurveda, Mahameda is listed as one of the eight herbs of the prestigious Ashtavarga group — a set of prized Rasayana botanicals documented in the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam for nutritive, aphrodisiac, and longevity-enhancing formulations. Like several Ashtavarga herbs, it is increasingly rare in wild collections due to habitat pressure.
